For our 20th anniversary we came together with Merz b. Schwanen to do a run of very special T-shirts, produced using Sea Island cotton—the finest cotton in the world—in both their 215 and 1950 t-shirt styles.
This 215 T-shirt is made from NM50 Sea Island cotton yarn spun by Switzerland’s Spoerry, a specialist spinner with a history dating back to 1866. The 7.5oz fabric has an exceptionally smooth, soft hand with a subtle natural sheen, while the remarkable strength of the fibers gives the shirt far more substance and durability than its luxurious feel might suggest.
Sea Island cotton is one of the rarest and most extraordinary cottons in the world, cultivated exclusively in the British West Indies under the particular Caribbean conditions required for the plant to thrive. Spoerry works directly with local farmers while maintaining its own plantation and fiber-processing operation, allowing unusually close control over the raw material from the field onward. The cotton is hand-picked and gently processed using traditional methods that preserve its exceptionally long, fine, and uniform fibers, producing yarn with outstanding strength, very low tendency to felt, a clean structure, and a naturally silky luster. Genuine Sea Island cotton represents no more than 0.0004% of worldwide cotton production, and the WISICA certification system exists specifically to guarantee the authenticity and purity of this exceptionally scarce fiber.
