We have come together with Japan's famed Pure Blue Japan to create a very special naturally dyed denim, woven on vintage Toyoda shuttle looms using #5 slub yarns for both the warp and weft. This denim combines three different shades of natural Tokushima-grown indigo in the warp with a natural sappanwood-dyed weft. Natural indigo develops its blue color through oxidation (exposure to oxygen) after dyeing; successive dips allow the dyers to build a greater depth of shade. Using three different shades of natural indigo allowed PBJ to really dial in the exact feel and look of indigo variation within the warp yarns. For the weft yarns sappanwood supplies a contrasting plant-derived color extracted from the tree’s heartwood, really complementing the wildly irregular natural indigo warp. These jeans were cut in PBJ's famed 019 straight tapered fit with a medium rise.
